Dokki Misdemeanor court handed Saturday the controversial Zamalek club president Mortada Mansour a one-year prison sentence for insulting the lawyer of the clubs hardcore fan group Ultras White Knights (UWK), Tarek Al-Awady.

Al-Awady filed a case against Mansour after the latter insulted him on a TV talk show, state media reported. The court also handed him aEGP 10,000 fine.

Since Mansour took up the club’s chairmanship, there has been an ongoing feud with the UWK, culminating in an alleged assassination attempt on Mansour in October 2014. The ultras strongly deny the accusations, however, Mansour submitted a legal complaint to have Egypt’s ultras movement banned and listed as a terrorist group.

The ‘assassination incident’ occurred in October of last year as Mansour prepared to unveil the football club’s new coach, with Mansour claiming in the media that some of the team’s hardcore fans attacked him with acid. A video of the incident, posted on the Facebook page of UWK, shows a young man slapping Mansour on the back of the neck in a parking lot.

The ultras stated the ‘acid’ was actually urine, and called Mansour a “dog of the system” for his alleged connections to the Egyptian establishment.
