A journalist with Tahrir newspaper, Sayed Fouda, was arrested by security forces at his house in Qaliubiya governorate early Sunday. Charges against the journalist were not announced, and his family remains uninformed of his whereabouts.
Noura Emam, Fouda’s wife, told Daily News Egypt that her husband was arrested by National Security officers, asserting that he has done no wrong.
“He covers legal affairs and whatever he writes is part of his job,” Emam added.
She also said that the Press Syndicate contacted her and informed her that they assigned a lawyer to try to locate her husband.
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) issued a statement denouncing Fouda’s arrest, and asserting that “the way Tahrir’s journalist Sayed Fouda was arrested is a crime of arbitrary detention”.
ANHRI said the security forces that stormed the journalist’s house at 2am smashed the apartment’s contents, seizing Fouda’s phones and computer in the process before blindfolding him as they made the arrest.
The rights NGO requested the journalist’s whereabouts to be revealed as well as the reasons behind his arrest or for his immediate release.
