A police officer was shot Wednesday morning by unknown assailants in Shebin Al-Kom in Menufiya governorate, according to a representative from the Interior Ministry’s press office.
The assailants fled the scene following the attack. The incident is currently under investigation, he added.
Menufiya is a governorate that has witnessed constant insurgent activities in Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Militant activity has primarily targeted security personnel through drive-by shootings or bomb attacks.
Earlier in March, masked assailants set a police checkpoint in Menufiya on fire after tying up three policemen and stealing their weapons.
On Tuesday, two policemen were injured in an explosion that hit the Civil Protection headquarters in Alexandria.
A police officer, Karim Hendawy, was killed and another was injured in a drive-by shooting by unknown assailants on 17 March in Marsa Matruh, according to an Interior Ministry statement.
