An armed man was killed outside a police station in Giza in an exchange of fire with the station’s security forces.
A man with a shotgun fired at the policemen securing the station, which prompted them to fire back, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The fire exchange resulted in the injury of a policeman, the attacker and a citizen passing by, and all were transported to hospital for treatment after security forces controlled the situation, according to the ministry.
The attacker died due to his injury upon arrival to the hospital, state-run Al-Ahram reported.
The Giza Security Investigations unit claimed that the killed man had a criminal record of thuggery and theft.
On Sunday, a policeman and four civilians were injured in an attack that targeted a security station in the vicinity of a church in the area of Agami in Alexandria.
The attack followed another bomb explosion the same morning in Cairo, on the 15th of May Bridge leading to the Zamalek neighbourhood. It resulted in the death of a policeman and the injury of two civilians. Ajnad Misr militant group claimed the attack.
Since the ouster of Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, militants frequently use drive-by shootings and bomb attacks to primarily target security personnel and facilities.
Ajnad Misr, one of the more prominent militant groups, mainly conducts operations in Greater Cairo, while “State of Sinai”, formerly known as Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, primarily launches attacks in North Sinai.
