Yemenis stranded in Egypt continued protesting their forced stay, this time at the Foreign Ministry. Since the start of Saudi-led military operations in Yemen they have been unable to return home.

Scores of Yemeni nationals gathered outside the ministry’s headquarters Sunday, demanding the Egyptian authorities help facilitate their return to Yemen.

Groups of Yemenis started protesting outside their embassy on 31 March, a week after the military operations forced the closure of Yemeni airspace. The Egyptian authorities also suspended flights in and out of Yemen, due to deteriorating security conditions.

Protesting in front of the embassy and demanding Yemeni officials facilitate their deportation did not garner positive results. The protests on 26 April, at the Yemeni embassy in Cairo, accused officials of “lying” concerning the exact date of their return home.

The protest at the Foreign Ministry called on Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to listen to their demands, with protestors describing Al-Sisi as “our big hope after Allah”.

The protesters also held signs calling on the Arab League, the United Nations and human rights organisations to intervene to facilitate the return to their homeland.
