The New Cairo Prosecution issued an order Friday summoning six students from the German University in Cairo (GUC).
The university’s administration had filed complaints against the students for taking part in a sit-in two months ago.
Following the death of Yara Tarek, when a bus ran over her on campus in March, the GUC Student Union (SU) announced a sit-in on campus.
Investigations on the students’ cases, only some of whom were student union members, are to begin on Sunday.
“The university is continuing its revenge policy,” said a Friday SU statement, after the administration did not allow a number of students to take their final exams.
After six days of protests, during which security tried to prevent students from entering the university’s campus on the grounds of orders by the administration, just over 85% of the students did not attend their mid-terms. They said this was to “show their objection against the university’s system”, according to a statement released by the GUC’s SU.
The SU’s list of demands includes questioning the entire transportation department and changing the campus security and parking system. The SU also demands that sidewalks are built for students to walk on and wait for buses. The students have also demanded that bus departures while students are on the grounds are prevented, and that well-equipped ambulances be available in the campus clinic.
Tarek was killed when she slipped and fell in the bus waiting area, reportedly when one bus reversed and another one moved forward.
The incident left the first-year Faculty ofEngineering student with a skull fracture that led to her death.
Police had arrived at the scene of the accident after ambulance transferred Tarek to a hospital.
The Revolutionary Socialists issued a statement condemning the incident, describing it as a result of “neglect”.
