President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Head of the National Council for Human Rights Mohamed Faek Tuesday to discuss the human rights situation in Egypt, covering the period between 30 June 2013 and December 2014.

During the meeting, Faek submitted a report the council prepared which included recommendations and appraisal of the Egyptian constitution and its text, guaranteeing rights and freedoms.

Faek said that the report covers a period that witnessed a number of positive aspects, including the end of the emergency law, except for certain areas in North Sinai given the requirements of fighting terrorism. Legislations to protect women against violence, especially harassment, and support their rights, were praised as well.

The report contains five sections on the human rights situation in Egypt, the fact-finding efforts and addressing human rights complaints, efforts to promote a human rights culture, the strategy of the council and its restructuring, and the council’s cooperation on the national, regional and international levels.

Deputy Head of NCHR Hafez Abu Saeda said the purpose of the visit is to hand the annual report to the president with included recommendations.

The report addressed the conditions in Egyptian prisons and cases of torture, and called for the amendment of the Protest Law, as well as NGOs law and anti-torture laws.

Al-Sisi noted that these recommendations will be studied, and requested a meeting with the Interior Minister to look into the situation of prisoners, Abu Saeda said.
