Two policemen were arrested on Sunday for possessing unlicenced weapons and cars in the governorate of Ismailia, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.
The evidence included three unregistered cars, three mechanical rifles, a 9 mm machine gun, a birdshot rifle, and 41 bullets.
The two police officers were reportedly the head of the investigations unit in East Qantara security department and his deputy who works as a lieutenant. Their arrest was ordered by the Ismailia prosecution.
The weapons found in their possession were allegedly part of a case that the police officers did not file a report on or send to the prosecution. They were reportedly found in one of the defendants’ cars near the Ismailia security directorate.
The Interior Ministry was not available for comment.
According to an Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) lawyer, no defendant should be held in detention for more than 48 hours without being referred to prosecution.
In May, a police officer was arrested in Cairo for irreparably damaging a driver’s eye during a quarrel over an ‘improper’ inspection. Moreover, a police conscript was sentenced to life in prison by the Giza Criminal Court over charges of sexually assaulting a mentally ill female prisoner inside Imbaba police station, officials said.
