An explosion targeting an electricity pylon took place behind the Fayoum Stadium Saturday morning, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.

The explosion severely damaged the pylon and damaged part of the stadium’s wall. There were no injuries reported.

Bomb explosions occur across Egyptian governorates targeting mainly security personnel and facilities. Other attacks target electricity pylons and telecommunications branches.

Last Wednesday, a police officer was shot in a drive-by-shooting   as he was standing guard in front of a Fayoum police station. The attack is the fourth on security personnel in Fayoum during the past week.

On 11 June, a police officer was injured outside of Al-Hamouly police station by fire from unknown assailants.

On 14 June, a police corporal was shot dead, sustaining injuries in different parts of his body. On the same day, another police officer was attacked on his way home by unknown assailants.

Militancy across Egypt has seen a significant increase since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Governorates including Sharqeya, Gharbyea, Giza, Aswan and Beheira, have seen frequent militant attacks, however North Sinai is the governorate witnessing the majority of attacks in Egypt.

Since the beginning of June, at least five attacks on police officers’ houses occurred. The latest of which was on Thursday, which left a police officer injured as a result of an explosion targeting his house, Al-Arish residents told Daily News Egypt. The officer was transferred to hospital for treatment.

The past week saw at least three attacks on police officers’ houses in North Sinai. One of them was bombed, the other two were set on fire. However none of the attacks left any injuries.

During the first week of June, an attack on a police officer’s house damaged neighbouring houses and shops and injured seven civilians of the same family, four of them were children.

Police officer Mohamed Salah Al-Samak was killed in an explosion last week targeting a military vehicle. Three conscripts were injured as a result of the explosion.

Generally, security personnel have been militant targets since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. Explosions in North Sinai occur in areas with high security presence including checkpoints and security campaigns.

Similar attacks however have resulted in civilian causalities on different occasions..

North Sinai militants known as “State of Sinai” launch almost all the attacks in the area particularly in East Al-Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid.
