Anti-government groups in Cairo held flash protests in main streets in Nasr City and the 6th of October district, leaving one police van burned out.
Ahead of the second anniversary of the 30 June events, which saw the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, a number of anti-government revolutionary groups announced plans to organise mass protests to defy what they call “oppressive rule”.
According to Students against the Coup (SAC), a van that was stationed in Nasr City is reported to have been burnt by “unknown assailants” during clashes between anti-government protesters and police personnel.
The Interior Ministry refused to comment on the incident.
In Mohandessin, a protest was organised in Al-Sudan Street, with the protesters blocking the road and clashing with local residents.
Supporters of Morsi have been staging weekly protests every Friday since his ouster in July 2013. However, the majority of these protests are now restricted to remote villages and working-class neighbourhoods, where security forces experience problems patrolling their streets.
