Two people died and 13 others were injured in an explosion that targeted their vehicle on a road between Al-Arish and Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai Monday.
According to report by state media, the vehicle was from the Transport and Road Authority and the head of the authority was in it.
This comes following a major assassination in Cairo that killed Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat. The events occurred on the eve of the events of 30 June, which some commemorate as a revolution, while Muslim Brotherhood supporters consider it a military coup against former president Mohamed Morsi.
Meanwhile, North Sinai Security Director Ali Al-Azazi was quoted by state media as saying that security in the governorate was “largely stable in comparison with last year, thanks to the efforts of the army and police in countering terrorism”.
Al-Azazi added that as 30 June approaches, the army set a meticulous security plan based on information reports tracing the movements and activities of ‘terrorist groups’, as informants also report to security the locations of planted bombs.
However, after the attack, Al-Azazi told the press that the incident was “God’s will”.
Just before Barakat’s assassination, Sinai-based militant organisation ‘State of Sinai’ broadcast a video of an operation in which three judges were killed.
