Former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq announced Thursday that he has revoked his resignation as president of the National Movement Party, after party members rejected his move to leave.
In a statement published by the National Movement Party, Shafiq said he would “pursue his tasks at the party”, adding that there would be a reshuffle of positions within the party, to be announced in the coming days.
In mid-June, Shafiq submitted his resignation to the party’s higher committee, citing his inability to perform duties from outside Egypt as the reason behind his move.
However, the party’s Deputy Head, Yahia Qadry, who replaced Shafiq in his absence, told Daily News Egypt at the time of Shafiq’s announcement that the party’s higher committee planned to convince the party chief to take back the resignation. A few days later, the party issued a statement rejecting Shafiq’s resignation.
Shafiq, who was prime minister and civil aviation minister under former president Hosni Mubarak, has lived in the UAE since he lost his presidential campaign to Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate Mohamed Morsi in June 2012. Shafiq contested in court the transparency of electoral results which led to Morsi’s victory.
