In April, the number of mobile phone users went down by 9% compared to the same period last year, according to a report by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology issued last week.
The report said that the number of mobile phone subscriptions reached 96m in April 2015, while it was at 101.9m subscriptions in the same period of 2014. Thus, the percentage of subscriptions in the country declined from 120.2% to 111.2%.
The report indicated that Internet users reached 27.3 million users in April. Mobile phones and USB devices acquired the largest share of Internet access means, with Internet users reaching more than 24.2 million users, while ADSL users amounted to 3.1 million.
According to the report, Cairo topped the governorates with highest internet usage, with 47% of the total Internet users in Egypt, followed by Delta governorates with 26% usage. Alexandria and Matrouh came next, with 11% usage, followed by Upper Egypt with 10%, and in last place came Sinai, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal cities, with 6%.
According to the ministry’s report, landline users declined in number, from 6.8 million users in April 2014 to 6.2 million users in April this year. As such, landline usage declined from 8.2% in April 2014 to 7.3% in April 2015.
