Far away from cinemas and drama, Egyptian actor Khaled Abo El-Naga never imagined he would come across a picture of his sister’s residence place on fire on Twitter, with a caption that read:
If anyone knows who lives in this block on Mohamed Mazhar Street in #Zamalek, let them know. Most are empty for the holiday.
The tweet went viral enough to reach Abo El-Naga just like any other user. He requested the person who wrote it to send him all the details he can get, as this is the place his sister lived with her cats.
A few hours later, Abo El-Naga posted a farewell picture of his sister on his Facebook page. “Farewell my beloved sister, the purest woman on earth,” his status read.
According to preliminary prosecution findings, fireworks hit the balcony of Salwa Abo El-Naga’s apartment setting it on fire. She refused to escape and leave her numerous cats behind, insisting on saving them all. She passed away from smoke inhalation and suffocation after saving 30 cats.
A friend of Abo El-Naga, who was questioned during investigations, stated that after she left the apartment she went back to save the lives of the cats she loved the most. They were all street cats which Abo El-Naga had rescued.
United Pets Egypt, a rescue shelter in which injured animals are being treated, announced that 19 cats survived. Seven cats have burns, some serious and others minor. The shelter thanked Abo El-Naga for her “sacrifice”.
