The death toll of a Nile boat collision with a barge has risen to 31 on Friday , according to State-run MENA news agency.
Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar told Daily News Egypt that recovery efforts are still ongoing in the matter.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a boat sank after it collided with a barge. Efforts to recover the deceased have been ongoing since the incident. Police arrested and detained the barge’s crew members who are currently being investigated.
Giza Governor Khaled Zakareya ordered compensations of EGP 20,000 to be issued to each family of the deceased and EGP 5,000 to those injured.
The Emergency and Relief Committee at the Arab Medical Union announced Thursday that EGP 2,000 will be distributed to the families of the victims.
According to state-run Al-Ahram, the boat had around 40 passengers on board.
