Al-Ahram Import and Export requested the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) sets standard specifications for electric cars in Egypt, in line with other countries worldwide that have made the move.

An EOS source, who requested anonymity, said the company plans to import a Chinese electric car. The source said the company is eager to outline the standard specifications for electric cars which will be imported after approval by the General Organization for Import and Export Control.

The source also said that the EOS currently has no standard specifications for electric cars. Instead, he said that the organisation demanded that the EOS look to those specifications as outlined by the EU, that can then be referred to by the EOS. This way, the EOS would have the chance to set the standard specifications in Egypt.

According to the source, the EOS welcomes specifications for electric cars relevant to Egypt, adding that the state tries to encourage investment and use of environmentally friendly cars. This has been the state’s wishes for the past five years.

The source said the EOS joined the 29th sub-committee of the transport committee affiliated to UNECE, to be in charge of the specifications and standards for security and car safety. Specifications can only be issued for the Egyptian car after their approval by the committee.
