Two policemen were killed on Wednesday morning in a shooting in the North Sinai town of Al-Arish. According to a press release from the Ministry of Interior’s media centre, the men were targeted by assailants on a motorcycle.

The ministry has identified the police officers as Corporal Ramadan Hassan Ragab Badr and Corporal Ahmed Abdallah Abuenein. According to state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram, the corporals were en route to work when shot, and security forces are currently attempting to catch the perpetrators.

Al-Watan newspaper reported both men as 37 years old, and said their bodies were transported to Al-Arish’s military hospital. The military spokesman had announced on separate occasions that the armed forces are in full control of North Sinai, despite an ongoing militant insurgency.

The insurgency has been ongoing for more than two years since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood government in July 2013.
