The Armed Forces announced Thursday the killing of three alleged ‘terrorists’ who attempted an attack on a security checkpoint in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid.
The military also seized the weapons which the three used in a drive-by shooting, no military injuries were reported. The armed forces official spokesperson published a picture, supposedly of the three bodies, covered in blood and lying on the floor next to a motorbike.
A separate, but similar, attack was also thwarted by security forces Tuesday, as a suicide bombing attempt targeted a security checkpoint in the North Sinai city of Al-Arish, according to a statement by the Ministry of Interior.
Large explosions, in which heavy artillery was reportedly used, had left hundreds of soldiers dead, according to experts, while police officers have been targeted in other governorates of Egypt.
This comes as new video released by “State of Sinai”, the peninsula’s “Islamic State”-affiliated militant group, documented a number of sophisticated operations on Egyptian army targets. The video also appeared to show the group’s capacity to move with alarming freedom through areas of North Sinai.
Amidst an ongoing war on terrorism in the North Sinai peninsula, the army is also coordinating with the Ministry of Interior regarding security preparations ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled in October.
On a different note, the naval forces welcomed a visiting Chinese fleet at the port of Alexandria. This comes at the same time as Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is visiting China, to stress upon mutual cooperation and exchange of experiences.
