Policeman shoots tuk-tuk driver

A low ranking police officer shot a tuk-tuk driver in Gharbeya on Friday, causing serious injuries to the driver’s pelvic area.

The Ministry of Interior said on Sunday that the case will be reviewed, and that it will punish the officer involved if the charges are proven true.

According to the officer, the tuk-tuk was moving along a highway; however, local media quoted the driver as saying that the driver was shot following an argument over a bribe.

A video by El-Tahrir newspaper showed the driver on a hospital bed, saying that he was willing to a pay bribe to the low ranking officer in order to retrieve his confiscated tuk-tuk.

The Gharbeya Security Director has ordered an investigation into the incident, with the prosecution having already commenced their own investigation into the incident. The case has now been moved to one involving assault resulting in a permanent disability.

According to investigations, the driver, named as Mokhtar Qandil, is an employee at the Ministry of Education. The incident left him with injuries to the abdomen, leg, and genitals.

The accused police officer, named as Ali Saafan, was reported to have fainted during the investigation and was transferred to a hospital. As a result, the prosecution has now postponed the interrogations until both sides involved in the case are in good health.
