A hotel manager in Marsa Allam was suspended for three months for allowing the distribution of flyers in the hotel that requested tourists to donate money or clothes to surrounding villages, the Ministry of Tourism said on Monday.
Reports had been circulating on many websites that tourists residing in a hotel in Marsa Allam have received flyers in their rooms requesting the donations.
In response, the Ministry of Tourism launched an investigation. The hotel manager was interrogated and tourist police visited the hotel to confirm the incident.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the Egyptian Hotel Association was ordered to nominate a new manager until the end of the suspension. The association must also write an official apology as the incident might affect the tourism sector in Egypt.
Marsa Allam has attracted a large number of tourists from all over the world since the opening of its international airport in 2001. Nestled between sea and desert, the town offers all kinds of activities. It is a world-renowned kite surfing destination, and an ideal starting point for safaris and wilderness exploration.
