The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will participate in the reclamation of 1.5m acres project, said UNIDO’s representative and Director in Egypt, Giovana Ceglie, on Sunday.

The organisation will help farmers to increase productivity and planning to establish complementary food industries, thus increasing the value-added agricultural products, said Ceglie during a celebration held by the UN office in Cairo to present the sustainable development objectives.

She further said UNIDO is cooperating with Egypt to provide expertise in greenhouse technology, which will increase productivity and rationalise irrigation.

“There are negotiations taking place between the UNIDO and the Egyptian government to benefit from the greenhouses’ technology in the reclamation of 1.5m acres project,” said Cegile.

These sustainable development objectives were adopted by 193 state members in the UN during the organisation’s assembly that took place in New York last September.

Cegile added that the new agenda believes that industrialisation is the most significant aspect for all countries to realise sustainable development objectives.

The industrial sector creates numerous job opportunities for the poor, young people and women, she said.

Meanwhile, the UNIDO works on improving the domestic industry in Egypt to become more competitive and productive with affordable prices and high quality in order to raise living standards, according to Cegile.

She added that the UNIDO is implementing a number of projects in various Egyptian governorates. These projects aim to help the private sector to invest in sustainable sectors, create job opportunities and rationalise the energy using renewable sources.

The UNIDO regional office in Cairo was established in 1999, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Over the years, UNIDO has been supporting Egypt to achieve social and economic growth through the promotion of industrial development for employment generation and environmental sustainability, according to the UNIDO’s website.
