Embattled German carmaker Volkswagen has said another one of its diesel motors may have had software installed to deceive emissions tests. Until now, only one type of engine had been affected.
On Thursday, VW said it was checking whether earlier versions of its EA 288 diesel engines had also been outfitted with the same kind of “defeat devices” that have caused the auto concern to recall more than 11 million vehicles worldwide.
That motor was introduced in 2012 as a successor to the EA 189, an older model that did not comply with newer European emissions regulations. So far, investigations into VW’s cheating software have revolved around versions of the EA 189 that were installed in Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat cars and vans.
Just last week, Germany’s automotive watchdog said the current version of the EA 288 motor was clear of any malicious software. But now the company has said that an earlier version of that same engine may have been affected by the scandal.
