Official Egyptian entities condemned Friday Beirut’s twin bombings that left more than 40 people dead in a populated quarter of Beirut Thursday night.
The Foreign Ministry denounced the attack, affirming “Egypt’s solidarity with Lebanon in such critical times”.
Similarly, the Egyptian Ambassador in Beirut, Mohamed Zayed, condemned the bombings, adding that the attack will unite the Lebanese people to reject terrorism. He further expressed his confidence in the Lebanese authorities’ abilities to investigate the attack, highlighting that Egypt has also advocated a direct strategy to counter terrorism.
Egypt’s Grand Mufti and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar also condemned the attacks, calling upon Lebanese to unite and abandon all sectarian disputes.
The attack left some 190 people injured, some of whom are in critical condition.
The area around Burj Al-Barajneh shopping centre, where the deadly attack took place, is said to be a stronghold for the Shi’a Hezbollah group.
Meanwhile, “Islamic State” militant group claimed the attack in posts on social media, but did not publish any videos or photos related to the attack.
