“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die,” 18th century poet Thomas Campbell had once said; 200 years later, the late Egyptian actor Omar Sharif is proof of this. The memory of Al-Sharif is still in the hearts of millions of fans and friends three months after he departed the world.
In celebration of his memory, the Cairo Opera House commemorated him as part of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF). The commemoration evening witnessed the attendance of many actors, who were friends with Sharif, as well as his son.
Spanish actress Claudia Cardinale made sure to be a part of the event due to her close friendship with Sharif, as well as famous French actress Andréa Ferréol. Actors Khaled El-Nabawy, Hussein Fahmy, and Yousra were some of the many public figures who participated at the event.
Attendees shared their memories with the actor. They all agreed how he managed to successfully represent Egypt at the international cinematic scenes and remembered his sense of humour, which always attracted his friends to work with him. He was known for being humble and close to others.
They concluded the evening by remembering that Omar Sharif’s death is considered a loss not only to the international cinema, but to all humanity.
