Elections begins Sunday in Egypt amid strong security presence

Security forces have assigned over 13,858 polling stations to receive voters on Sunday for the second phase of parliamentary elections in 134 governorates.  According to a Friday statement by the military, over 160,000 security personnel from the army will be aiding the police to secure the elections.

Elections will take place Sunday and Monday, according to the Supreme Electoral Commission (SEC). On Saturday, Egyptians abroad will vote.

Friday is supposed to witness electoral silence by the candidates.

The army said that personnel from the Third Field Army, the Egyptian Navy, the Air Force, Special Forces will participate in securing the elections, judges, votes, and the vicinity of polling stations.

Plus, the Air Force, with the assistance of the Egyptian Army’s media apparatus, will provide coverage of the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the interior ministry announced it arrested a total of 97,677 convicts during October. 44 of them were sentenced to death, while 616 were sentenced to life.
