Four policemen were shot dead on Saturday morning after assailants fired at a checkpoint on the Saqara highway, south of Giza.

The dead policemen include low-ranking police officers and three conscripts, state media reported. The Ministry of Interior said that the checkpoint was attacked by assailants on motorbikes.

Shootings, mainly targeting police and army officers, as well as state officials, have become a near weekly occurrence in Egypt since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
