Andy Murray keeps making history in the name of his country and on the last Sunday in November 2015, he helped lift Great Britain’s first Davis Cup in nearly 80 years with some solid tennis.
Andy Murray gave Britain its first Davis Cup title in 79 years when he beat Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in the first of reverse singles Sunday. The win gave Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
“It’s been an incredible few years,” Murray said after his match. “I can’t believe we did it, I never thought we would. I play my best tennis when I play for my country.”
Britain is the only nation to have competed in all Davis Cup editions since 1900 and its 10th title makes it the third most successful nation after the United States (32) and Australia (28). Nevertheless, Britain last won the tournament in 1936 when Fred Perry was their star. Murray, ranked No. 2 in the world, is unbeaten in Davis Cup play this year.
“The atmosphere was phenomenal,” Murray added. “I imagine we’ll have a party tonight.”
