Moving to the use of LED technology can help reduce energy consumption by about 80%, according to Thierry Boulanger, Lighting CEO at Philips.
Talking to Daily News Egypt on the sidelines of the Philips innovation experience, which took place in Johannesburg South Africa, Boulanger indicated that Philips has been able to find more efficient lighting solutions that lead to cutting energy consumption in some districts in Cairo from 450 watts to around 100 watts using LED technology.
Philips is collaborating with the Egyptian government in a number of projects in the lighting sector, whereby the company is working on converting the old street lighting technology to LED and HID technologies, according to Boulanger.
He further indicated that more than 120,000 HID lighting lamps are currently being installed in the city of Cairo by Philips and other electronic third party suppliers.
Further talking about the most recent lighting installations, Boulanger indicated that Philips has adopted solar street lights for private housing entities in New Cairo.
According to Boulanger, moving to more efficient methods of lighting is what is very much needed in Egypt now, and is even more vital than establishing new power stations.
Philips is set to split into two companies by next February 2016, one to be specialised in the lighting sector, while the other will focus on healthcare as well as consumer electronics sectors.
The splitting decision comes as Philips aims to provide more specialised focus on the different technologies it is offering, Boulanger indicated.
Philips was founded in 1891, with its headquarters being in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The company specialises in three main sectors; healthcare, lighting and consumer lifestyle. In 2014 Philips’ global sales were valued at €21.4bn.
