The defence team for several Muslim Brotherhood members serving sentences in Mansoura Public Prison announced on Monday that the prisoners have gone on hunger strike.
In a statement, the lawyers said that the Brotherhood members are protesting against the prison administration’s mistreatment of prisoners who are unwell.
They said that prison authorities had refused to provide medical care for prisoners who were ill, and that three prisoners had died as a result.
According to the defence lawyers, Mohamed Abu Auf, 43, died on Friday after he was denied permission to leave prison for surgery after developing appendicitis.
The lawyers said his death is the third such case resulting from negligence on the part of the prison management.
