A police conscript was killed and four others were injured in an explosion that targeted their vehicle in Al-Arish, North Sinai, officials said Sunday.
According to the Interior Ministry, the vehicle was passing near a police station in Al-Arish when it exploded due to a planted bomb.
This comes shortly after parliamentary elections were concluded in Sinai. On 24 November during the runoffs of the second round of elections, a suicide attack targeted a hotel where judges supervising elections were staying, killing a judge, prosecutor, and four security personnel.
Islamic State (IS)-affiliated military group State of Sinai claimed the attack shortly afterwards.
The military published Monday its monthly report on operations conducted. According to the military spokesperson, the operations targeted several fields: weapons smuggling, illegal migration and border crossing, drug dealing, and the construction of tunnels on borders.
Nearly 20 tunnels were destroyed in North Sinai, 15 tonnes of drugs were seized and 478 rifles of different types were confiscated, the army said Monday.
The military further reported that border guards arrested 610 illegal migrants on the borders of Salloum, Siwa, and Matruh on the western side and Mediterranean coast as well as Marsa Allam and other cities along the coast of the Red Sea.
