Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said, Saturday, that Egypt will play an important role in favour of the Palestinian cause, after taking a seat in the UN Security Council.
In an interview with official Egyptian news agency MENA, Abbas said: “Egypt, with its Arab, regional and international weight, will be a great benefit for all Arabs, especially Palestine.”
He also pointed to Egypt’s efforts in theQuartet on the Middle East to address the Palestinian case, noting that it can play an important role in this capacity.
The Quartet on the Middle East was formed 13 years ago. Including in the quartet are the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Russia.
In February 2015, the quartet decided to include the diplomatic efforts of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Arab League to attempt to resume peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel.
Abbas further continued that the Palestinians will undertake every effort to end the Israeli occupation, and will demand a just peace.
Regarding reconciliation with Hamas, Abbas said he is ready to discuss two issues: forming a national unity government, and holding elections to end the division.
