In an unexpected occurrence for the African Club of the Century and Egypt’s biggest football giant, Al-Ahly SC sacked their Portuguese head coach José Peseiro after just 14 rounds of the Egyptian Premier League.

Former director of football Abdel Aziz Abdel-Shafy was appointed as the new temporary manager in Peseiro’s place for the upcoming games against Ismaili FC and Ittihad Alexandria, next Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

Recent reports and rumours have linked the former Al-Ahly manager to talks over potentially managing a major UAE club, following in the footsteps of fellow Portuguese Jesualdo Ferreira, the former Al-Zamalek SC head coach who left the White Knights to manage  the Qatari Al-Saad club.

Al-Ahly club now stands in third place in Egyptian league table, with 26 points from 12 games, just one point behind its biggest rival Al-Zamalek and Misr Lel Makasa, both of which have 27 points.

Peseiro  led Al-Ahly to eight wins and two draws, against Wadi Degla and Daqahleya, while the team lost only twice against Smouha and Misr Lel Makasa.
