An IED explosion took lives of a colonel and four army soldiers and injured 12 in Arish Wednesday.

The remotely-ignited improvised explosive device targeted a vehicle transporting conscripts, according to the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper.

Only three soldiers were initially reportedly killed but local reports said a fourth died before reaching a hospital. The attack is so far unclaimed.

Insurgents have intensified attacks in North Sinai since the ousting of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. The governorate has become the scene of violent clashes between extra-state militants and the Egyptian armed forces.

“State of Sinai”, formerly known as Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, has claimed responsibility for the majority of the attacks against security forces in North Sinai.
