Egyptian Squash player Ali Farag, ranked 22nd internationally, won the 2016 Motor City Open International Squash Championship in Detroit, US.
In the championship’s final game, which lasted for 50 minutes, Farag, playing for the Heliopolis Sporting Club, beat English player Nicholas Matthew, ranked third internationally. Farag won with the scores 11-7, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7, and the final result of 3-1.
The championship prize money was $70,000.
Farag reached the final after beating French player Mathieu Castagnet, ranked 10th internationally, in the semifinals, with scores of 12-10, 9-11, 11-4, 11-9, and the final result of 3-1.
Matthew had defeated Spanish player Borja Golán, rank 19th internationally, also in the semifinals, with scores of 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, and 7-11, a victory that allowed him to qualify for the final match against Farag.
Farag defeated his compatriot, El-Shorbagy in the quarterfinal matches, with scores of 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, and 11-6.
Farag was named PSA Player of the Month in April 2015. Egypt was the only Arab and African country that participated in this championship with three Egyptian players; champion Ali Farag, Mohamed El-Shorbagy who is ranked first internationally, and Mohamed Abouelghar who is ranked 25th internationally.
Nasir Iqbal, ranked 36th internationally, participated in the competition, but exited the tournament after the first round.
