Egyptian national fencing team qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics

Egypt national fencing team  officially qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, before April’s ranking for the top African fencing teams was even released.

Alaaeldin Abouelkassem, 25, is among the three fencers who will represent Egypt in the Olympics. The left-handed fencer is 1.88m tall and weighs 82kg.

Aboulkassem previously participated in the 2012  Summer Olympics in London where he won silver. The gold medal went to Chinese fencer Lei Sheng and the bronze to South Korean Choi Byung-Chul.

At the 2013 Mediterranean Games in the Turkish city of Mersin, Aboulkassem came in third place.

In the African arena, Aboulkassem has won two gold medals at the 11th African Games in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. He received one of these medals playing individually and the other when he competed as part of the Egyptian team.

As for his victories at the Pan Arab Games, Aboulkassem won two gold medals in 2011in Doha, Qatar; once again, he won competing individually and as part of the national team.
