Dozens of family members gathered in front of the Press Syndicate Saturday to protest the treatment of their detained relatives, as well as demanding “fair trials” and “an end to the death sentence”.

Two detained journalists with deteriorating health conditions were referred to hospitals following a sit-in to protest poor conditions in prisons for detained journalists was launched at the press syndicate earlier on Monday.

The Ministry of Interior responded hours after announcing the start of the sit-in asserting that that the minister of interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar instructed intensive medical care and follow-up for detained journalists in need of medical care, according to a statement from the sit-in coordinators.

Journalists Youssef Shaaban and Hany Salah Eddin were referred respectively to Al-Qabbary and Al-Manyal hospitals as Shaaban is suffering from a failing liver while Salah Eddin is need of an urgent eye surgery, according to the statement.

Earlier, journalists Hisham Gaafar and Hossam El-Sayed were transferred to prison hospitals.

Tens of journalists joined the sit-in announced earlier on Monday by prominent journalist and head of the Freedoms Committee at the Press Syndicate Khaled El-Balshy and committee member Mahmoud Kamel.
