A group of lawyers protested outside the Lawyers Syndicate, demanding security officials reveal the whereabouts of detained lawyer Islam Salamah.

Sayyida Qandil, a civil rights lawyer, and one of the participants said: “the syndicate’s Freedoms Committee refused to participate in the protest.” Daily News Egypt could not reach head of Lawyers Syndicate Sameh Ashour for comment.

“The lawyer who is following up on cases of enforced disappearance has been forcefully disappeared,” Qandil said.

Salamah’s family said that plain-clothed security forces stormed Salamah’s house and arrested him. His family said the men confiscated his belongings and electronic devices.

Salamah is well-known for following up and volunteering to defend individuals accused of terrorism charges, and those belonging to militant groups. He is a lawyer in several high-profile cases such as the “Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis” case, in which more than 200 defendants are facing charges of planning and committing acts of terrorism in Egypt after the forceful dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adaweya square in 2013. He is also known for volunteering to represent female protesters who are caught by the police.
