Minister of Transportation Saad Al-Geyoushi and Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Ahmed Darwish have agreed to an infrastructure plan in the Suez Canal Area Development Project.
The agreed to plan will pertain to maritime transport as well as the construction of roads, railways, and water channels that will link Egyptian ports with development projects. The project is part of the government’s plan to maximise economic activity in the region, according to Al-Geyoushi.
The plan is expected to strengthen trade infrastructure within Egypt and across the region, linking Nile Basin countries with a shipping line based in Victoria Lake.
The Ministry of Transportation is preparing the specification of a call for tender to solicit the services of international parties in the management and construction of the planned railway. The tender will aim to reduce the losses that the government authority has suffered in the past several years, according to Al-Geyoushi.
The ministry launched a twin project in conjunction with the European Union, as well as developing a national plan for the development of all transport sectors, including the railway. The project is expected to cost EGP 200bn, EGP 90m of which will be allocated to the railway.
According to Al-Geyoushi, this plan will be implemented over the course of four years.
