Nahdat Misr Company sanitation workers ended their open-ended strike Monday after management agreed to issue their overdue wages and vowed to answer their demands.
One of the protesting workers said the company began issuing the overdue payments Monday at noon. He added that a police force from Alexandria police station came to “threaten” the workers at the headquarters of the strike action. “They didn’t clash with us but the workers felt intimidated by having guns and sticks pointed at them amid peaceful demands,” he told Daily News Egypt Tuesday.
Nahdat Misr Company general manger Osama Al-Khouly was not available for comment regarding that incident. The Ministry of Interior denied any knowledge of the incident.
Since Thursday, the workers have been protesting inside company headquarters, demanding the payment of overdue wages and accusing management of avoiding workers and of “blaming the monetary problems on the governorate”.
Nahdat Misr Company is one of the private companies contracted by the Egyptian government to manage security at various private intuitions and the implementation of infrastructure projects. The company was founded in 2011 after former prime minister Ibrahim Mehleb, a current advisor to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, advocated for the privatisation of government services.
