Twin explosions rocked the departure hall of Brussels’ airport during rush hour on Tuesday morning, reported Belgian media.

At least one person has died as a result, reported news agency Belga. Witnesses on the scene said that several people were injured.

“There were two blasts in the departure hall. First aid team are in place for help,” said airport spokeswoman Anke Franse.

Smoke could be seen rising from the terminal building where the windows had been shattered.

It was not immediately clear whether or not the incident was a terrorist attack, reported public broadcaster RTBF.

Brussels airport has been closed until further notice, with no flights leaving or arriving at the airport.
