Egyptian gymnasts stand out in 2016 African Gymnastics Championships

The 2016 African Gymnastics Championships concluded its events with an impressive array of victories for Egyptian gymnasts at the 13th edition of the championship which was held in Algeria.

The Egyptian women’s gymnastics team took first place in the championship. In the women’s individual all-around, Egyptian Sherine El-Zeiny won gold. Second and third place went to South Africans Claudia Cummins and Kirsten Beckett, respectively.

As El-Zeiny told Daily News Egypt, this is her third African title. In 2007 she won the African Games, held also in Algeria, and in 2009 she won the African Championship.

This was not the only victory for Egypt’s female gymnasts. The Egyptian girls’ gymnastics team won the junior teams’ division. As for the junior individuals all-around, Egyptians Farah Ahmed and Farah Said won gold and bronze, respectively.

Egyptian male gymnasts also emerged victorious from this championship. Ali Abou El-Kassem won gold on the rings and Tarek Hamdy won silver. Hamdy also obtained a bronze medal in the men’s individual all-around and the men’s team won silver in the team’s division.

In the junior teams’ division, the Egyptian national boys’ gymnastics team won first place. While in the junior individual all-around, Abdel Rahman Magdy, Ahmed Ali, and Omar El-Arabi won gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
