The Kremlin declared Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the upcoming Nuclear Summit scheduled to be held next week in Washington.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov justified Russia’s non-participation in the summit as being due to the absence of Russian role in preparation to that summit, according to Russian News Agency Sputnik.
He said Russia views tackling matters related to nuclear security as requiring common efforts and putting into consideration the other side’s points of view. He continued that Russia will not participate in the summit because of the shortage in cooperation with the concerned sides in the prioritisation subjects that will be discussed in that summit.
The White House said on Tuesday that Russia “has isolated itself and missed an opportunity” by choosing to be absent from the Nuclear Security Summit planned to be held in Washington.
Also on Tuesday, the White House’s deputy national security adviser, Benjamin J. Rhodes, told reporters that Russia’s non-participation in the nuclear summit is a missed opportunity for Russia.
He added that the United States and Russia will continue to cooperate and discuss issues related to nuclear security.
