The government has set a timeline for the implementation of the social and middle-income housing programme, with the aim of delivering approximately 300,000 units by the end of 2016, according to a cabinet statement Saturday evening.
The government plans to deliver about 750,000 housing units by the end of 2018 in addition to the 135,000 units for inhabitants of informal housing.
This came in response to parliament members’ remarks that the government’s social and middle-income housing programme is not scheduled over a timeline for the implementation of the targeted projects.
A source at the cabinet said that the government’s action plan is currently under study in parliament, and that it has specified a timeline of approximately 27 months for the completion of projects in the plan, ending at the close of fiscal year (FY) 2017/2018.
Regarding sanitation projects, the programme targets raising the ratio of sanitation coverage in urban areas to 95% by the end of June 2018, compared to the current 60%, and in the villages up to 50% compared to the current 15%.
As for the development of the roads and bridges network, the government has targeted the establishment of six new highways by the Nile, as well as the establishment of 16 new bridges to cancel intersections, all by the end of June 2018.
The implementation of the first and second phases of the national project for roads is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2016, with a total length of 5,000 km.
Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said, after meeting with a number of ministers at the cabinet headquarters, that the government initiated an unprecedented move by conducting a full inventory of projects being implemented, as well as the stalled projects, in all development sectors, according to a press statement on Saturday. The results of such inventory of each governorate will be sent to its parliament representative.
The report will include project data, information on the current situation, project investments, remaining work, and the date scheduled for the completion of the project.
