A total of 25 protesters, who were arrested during Friday’s nationwide demonstrations, had their detention renewed for 15 days on Monday.
According to a number of human rights NGOs working on the case, unlike dozens of arrested protesters released later in the day, this group remained in detention at the Qasr Al-Nil police station, despite 69 people being released from that station during the same events.
The NGOs working on the case include the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) and Al-Haqanya Law Centre. AFTE reported that defence lawyers appealed against the detention order.
Moreover, nine other protesters remain in detention in Alexandria, including two minors who were placed in a juvenile detention facility, ECESR’s local bureau in the governorate confirmed to Daily News Egypt on Monday.
The protests erupted against President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his government after he announced the signing of a maritime border agreement with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz earlier this month, under which sovereignty over Tiran and Sanafir islands would be “reinstated” to Saudi Arabia.
The calls for protests were renewed for 25 April, which coincides with Sinai Liberation Day.
