Thirty Sinai Province militants were killed in airstrikes conducted by the Egyptian Air Force on Monday south of Sheikh Zuweid city, according to statement published on the Air Force spokesperson’s official Facebook page.
“Heroes from the Egyptian military took revenge on Sinai Liberation Day after receiving accurate information about militants’ locations in areas south of Sheikh Zuweid and Al-Toma village. The Air Force launched several airstrikes against militants’ ammunition and weapon stores. These strikes resulted in the death of 30 militants and full destruction of their armoury,” the statement read. The spokesperson’s social media page posted photos documenting the airstrikes.
The Armed Forces thwarted an attempt attack on military checkpoints by pre-emptively attacking and destroying three militant vehicles transporting arms, according to the statement.
The Islamic State-affiliated group recently claimed responsibility for an attack on a security vehicle in Sheikh Zuweid which left 20 military personnel dead or injured, according to statement issued by the militant group.
Sinai has become the scene of frequent clashes between militants and state security forces.
As a result, an extensive counter-insurgency operation was launched to curb militancy. The Egyptian government has imposed a state of emergency in the peninsula’s northern regions.
