Tunisian authorities detained 14 Egyptian fishermen on Wednesday near a Tunisian port.
Egypt’s ambassador to Tunisia Ayman Mesharrafa told state run news agency MENA on Thursday that the fishermen were transferred to the maritime base in Sfax for further investigations.
Mesharrafa said the embassy is following up closely on the investigations.
Several similar incidents have befallen Egyptian fishermen in recent months. Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has previously warned fishermen of trespassing maritime borders.
Libyan authorities released in mid-April 16 detained Egyptian fishermen after 10 months of detention for breaching international fishing laws.
Earlier this year, a fishing boat sunk in Sudanese territorial waters on 30 January, carrying 14 people. Two were rescued and one body was retrieved.
