For the first time in 50 years, a US cruise ship, the “Adonia”, has anchored in Havana’s harbor, symbolizing a new era for the long-time enemy states.
Eager spectators stood at Havana’s harbor promenade in order to watch the US ship enter the bay of the Cuban capital, some holding US flags. Cubans were travelling aboard the “Adonia” as well. “I left Cuba when I was four years old,” Mili Martín said, coming from the exile stronghold Miami. It is the first time in 46 years that she is returning to her homeland. “I am very moved,” she assured, tears in her eyes. The 50-year-old is taking a seven day tour around the Caribbean with her husband.
The “Adonia”, with around 700 passengers, will alight in two other harbors over the next few days. On the cruise passengers will get a feel for Cuban flair during excursions on shore as well as on the ship. The organizers will offer salsa lessons and mojito mixing – a national drink in Cuba – according to media reports. In the future, the cruise will take place twice a month.
