Egypt consumed about 73.36m tonnes of petroleum products and natural gas during the fiscal year (FY) 2014/2015, compared to 73.04m tonnes in FY 2013/2014, an increase of 0.43%, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The agency released its annual environmental statistics bulletin for 2014 on Monday, stating that the amount of emissions of carbon dioxide resulting from the consumption of petroleum products and natural gas reached 201.34m metric tonnes in FY 2014/2015 compared to 197.14m tonnes in FY 2013/2014, an increase of 2.13%.

The total amount of produced clean water stood at 8.87bn cubic meters in FY 2013/2014 compared to 8.79bn cubic meters in 2012/2013, an increase of 0.9%.

The report noted that Egyptians consumed 6.60bn cubic meters of fresh water in FY 2013/2014, versus 5.98bn cubic meters in FY 2012/2013, an increase of 10.4%. The average per capita of pure water produced registered 103.4 cubic meters, compared with 105.0 meters, a drop of 1.5%, which CAPMAS attributed to population increase.

In the framework of commitment to the Montreal Protocol on the gradual reduction of consumption that depletes the Ozone Layer, CAPMAS explained that the use of Halon gas ceased in 2007 and CFC since 2011. Moreover, it noted that the use of methyl bromide gas has been gradually declining, registering 10 tonnes in 2014 compared to 92 tonnes in 2013, a decline of 89.1%.
