Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amr Abdellatif Aboulatta, hosted a consultation between the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) on Tuesday.
Egypt is supposed to head the UNSC in May, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier announced, vowing to push African issues forward and put the spotlight on security challenges facing the international community.
The meeting held on Tuesday is special as it comes on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the first talks held between the two councils, Aboulatta said in a statement.
During the meeting, both councils tackled developments in the security situation in Somalia and Burundi. According to Aboulatta, both councils also reviewed their partnership on the political and organisational level and also outlined their future vision towards resolving peace and security challenges in Africa more efficiently and comprehensively.
Following the meeting, Egypt also hosted an open discussion at the Security Council which addressed cooperation between the UN and the African Union. Aboulatta said that those events will culminate on Wednesday to celebrate Africa Day.
Africa Day is an annual commemoration that dates back to 1963 when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded.
Among the activities made by Egypt during its ruling for the UNSC in May was a meeting in Cairo between UNSC representatives from the 15 member states with the Arab League.
The meeting tackled developments of the Palestinian issue, the Middle East peace process, updates on the situation in both Libya and Somalia, according to an official statement by the UN.
