2016 Internazionali BNL d’Italia’s tennis champions become runners-up at the 2016 Roland Garros

Serbian tennis champion, Novak Djokovic won the 2016 French Open, also known as Roland Garros, celebrated in Paris, after defeating English player Andy Murray.

The scores were 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, and the final score was 3-1 in Djokovic’s favour.

Both champions played against each other 34 times with Djokovic winning 24 times.

Previous to the Roland Garros tournament, both players met in the 2016 Internazionali BNL d’Italia’s final where Murry won with the scores of 6-3, 6-3, and a final score of 2-0.

 

During this final match, celebrated in Rome, it was raining and the weather made playing difficult. Djokovic was nervous, as he slipped more than once. He asked the umpire several times to delay the match until the rain stopped. However, it was decided that the match would continue.

Other memorable matches at Roland Garros tournament include Spanish player Garbiñe Muguruza’ winning the women singles’ division, defeating USA’s Serena Williams, ranked the first internationally, with the scores of 7-5, 6-4 and the final score of 2-0.  After this tournament, Muguruza rank increased to second internationally.

Both Murray and Williams became 2016 Roland Garros runner-ups for men and women respectively after both previously were 2016 Internazionali BNL d’Italia champions.
